New pedestrian routes for Birmingham New Street Station

Challenge

Birmingham New Street Station is undergoing a transformation. Over 140,000 passengers use New Street every day, more than double the number it was designed to cater for.  The station is dark, unwelcoming and overcrowded with poor access for passengers.
 
Network Rail needed to find a way to keep the pedestrian access to the station open to the public, whilst minimising disruption. It was essential that the tunnels offer a safe, clean and direct route to the station, whilst protecting public safety. 

Results

Allsops were approached by our client, Safe Route, to help create a new pedestrian access. We have supplied the bespoke sheet metal framework and panels. The tunnels were built offsite and installed at the busy station through the night, reducing disruption to passengers.

The first phase half of the new concourse at Birmingham New Street station has opened to passengers, marking the completion of the first phase of the project to transform the station.
